OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school, music program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City’s least-resourced neighborhoods and schools. Under Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop’s artistic leadership and direction, OrchKids is the cornerstone of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s programs to make a difference within the broad and diverse Baltimore community. In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic instruction, performance and mentorship opportunities, as well as meals and services at no cost to our families. Currently OrchKids works with nine public schools in Baltimore City, serving children from Pre-K through 12th grade.
Job Summary:
The OrchKids Violin/Viola Teaching Artist is a dynamic educator who teaches violin/viola classes to students in grades 2-12. The Violin/Viola Teaching Artist helps guide the musical development of the program’s violin/viola players through small group classes (2-6 students).
The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. This methodology aims to promote synchronicity and community as well as simultaneously cultivating high artistic instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning challenging repertoire) and fostering creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition).
OrchKids supports the professional development of all our teaching artists by providing compensated and mandatory training on topics including trauma-informed teaching, classroom routines and practices, implicit bias and racism within the context of Baltimore City, and other pedagogical resources. Support and feedback is also provided through teacher observation, reflection meetings, and regular communication with Program Managers, Senior Education Manager, and Director of Programs. OrchKids Teaching Artists also have the opportunity to participate in a number of student concerts and partake in our unique Collective Composition workshops, during which we work with our students to create and perform new, original music.
Requirements:
- Must have a complete COVID-19 Vaccine and submit proof of vaccination
Teaching Responsibilities:
- Teach violin/viola small group classes (~4-6 students) in accordance with the OrchKids curriculum and educational philosophy
- Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to OrchKids students
- Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating both their technical and ensemble skills
- Embrace OrchKids’ mission, goals, and guiding principles
- Assist with the implementation of systems, standards and evaluations related to student progress
- Perform administrative duties essential to running one’s own classroom, including photocopying, room setup/breakdown, lesson planning, etc.
- Supervise students during transitions and breaktime
- Attend required concerts, meetings, events and professional development sessions
- Actively incorporate into classes the perspectives, strategies, language, routines, and other pedagogical tools conveyed through the OrchKids professional development sessions
- Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with OrchKids staff
- Creating substitute plans if there is a necessary absence
- Additional tasks/responsibilities:
- Copy necessary music/scores
- Plan outside of class time (additional time included in salary)
- Facilitate students’ fall baseline assessment as instructed
- Supply requests/maintenance/managing classroom needs
- Communicate with the team and respond to student nomination requests for outside musical opportunities
- Respond to emails within 48 hours
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a role model to students
- Strong classroom management skills
- Considerable experience teaching beginner – intermediate level students, preferably in a group setting
- In-depth knowledge of beginner to advanced string pedagogy and repertoire
- Willingness to jump in and embrace OrchKids’ non-traditional approach to music-making through creative composition, improvisation and playing a variety of musical genres
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively with the OrchKids team and string department

Job Summary:
Our Teaching Artists are dynamic educators who teach instrumental and choral group classes to students, ranging in grades from Pre-K to 12th, depending on the instrument and class. The classes are based on student level/age and meet for one hour, 3-4 days/week. The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, wholesome and evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. Embracing OrchKids educational philosophy, our teaching artists help guide the musical development of the program’s students through these classes. This methodology aims to promote synchronicity and community as well as simultaneously cultivating high artistic instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning challenging repertoire) and fostering creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition).
Substitute Teaching Artist positions include: choir, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion (orchestral percussion and bucket drumming), harp, and early childhood musicianship.
Responsibilities:
- Group classes in accordance with the OrchKids curriculum and educational philosophy.
- Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to OrchKids students
- Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating both their technical and ensemble skills

Job Summary:
The OrchKids Program Manager plays an integral role in managing and leading the operational, artistic, and logistical planning for OrchKids programming. This position acts as a core member of the OrchKids program team and is responsible for running the daily operations at assigned sites as well as the oversight of teaching artist staff. As a key fixture of the program team, this position also supports coordinating cross-site projects as well as guest artist performances, workshops, and other engagement opportunities for their sites. Supervised by the OrchKids Manager of Programs, this position also works collaboratively with the OrchKids Director of Education as well as other Program Managers and team members. This position will have some evening/weekend responsibilities.
Specific Responsibilities:
DESIGN:
- Work collaboratively with OrchKids Manager of Programs, Director of Education, and Senior Director to design site programmatic framework and schedule for 2-3 sites
- Work collaboratively with the Manager of Programs, Director of Education, and Artistic and Program Operations Manager to create/implement artistic content, initiatives, workshops, and guest artist engagements
- Design/Implement cross-site opportunities with the Program, Education, and Leadership Teams
- Work closely with Manager of Programs and other Leadership/Education Team members to evaluate programming and design strategic adjustments to current and new OrchKids programming
MANAGE/SUPERVISE:
- Manage the operations for all assigned sites including:
- Student enrollment process, site-based payroll, data collection, student tracking/retention, any administrative reporting, site level communication systems, and other HR matters in adherence to the OrchKids standard operating procedures
- Manage OrchKids Teaching Artists at assigned sites
- Work collaboratively with the Manager of Programs and Director of Education and Senior Manager in the creation of site budgets and site budgetary decisions
- Manage the OrchKids site-based calendar, including OrchKids event information, teacher absences, and school site events such as field trips, testing schedules, closure, etc.
BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT:
- Work closely with Teaching Artists, Manager of Programs, and Education Teams to implement consistent behavior management systems
- Support teachers during class time with behavior management and student office referrals
INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:
- Maintain clean and organized classroom/office environments
- Work closely with Artistic and Program Operations Manager to maintain site instrument inventory, equipment, and supplies at sites
- Support teachers in maintaining music library and student music folders, in particular, ensuring distribution of music for concerts, gigs, and special events
- Manage the loan process for student instruments, including maintaining records of taking instruments home, when instruments are not returned, or lost/damaged instruments
- Support Teaching Artists and students with instrument specific queries or repair issues in collaboration with Artistic and Operations Manager
- Assist in equipment transport, loading/unloading, and setup for concerts, guest artist performances, and special events at OrchKids sites and concert venues
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a complete COVID-19 vaccine and booster shot, and submit proof of this vaccination
POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual candidate strongly preferred but not required
- Personal commitment to social justice, restorative educational and anti-racist practices, as well as trauma-informed philosophies
- Demonstrated effective planning and organizational skills, able to meet deadlines
- Personal leadership through example, coupled with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
- Ability to multi-task calmly and to handle emergencies effectively
- Effective public speaking skills and presence
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong managerial and people skills, and the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy and the strictest confidence as needed
- At least 3 years of experience working in a mentorship and/or education capacity, with elementary/middle school age children preferred

Dates: June 27th-July 29th, 2022
Hours: Approximately 25 hours per week during program time (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 4:30 pm). Hours can be flexible depending on availability. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
Compensation: Both paid and unpaid internships are available.
- Paid interns receive $100/week and must be available to work 25 hours per week. These positions are typically offered to college students who are interested in pursuing a career in music, education, and arts administration.
- Unpaid internships are often pursued by high school and college students looking to fulfill service learning requirements (or those who are just interested in supporting a musically-driven environment).

Organizational Summary:
OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school, music program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City’s least-resourced neighborhoods and schools. Under Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop’s artistic leadership and direction, OrchKids is the cornerstone of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s programs to make a difference within the broad and diverse Baltimore community. In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic instruction, and performance and mentorship opportunities, as well as meals and services at no cost to our families. Currently OrchKids works with nine schools in Baltimore City, serving children in grades Pre-K through 12th grade.
Job Summary:
The BSO OrchKids program is seeking Interns for its 2022 Summer Session. Interns will work with OrchKids staff to provide support in the operations of a large music education non-profit. In addition to assisting with teaching responsibilities, administrative duties, and special program projects, interns will have the opportunity to gain leadership experience, develop their professional goals, and learn from experienced OrchKids teaching artists and staff in musical and creative activities. This summer’s session will conclude with a student Collaborative Composition week. The OrchKids staff who will be leading the Collaborative Composition sessions have done this work around the world and provide a unique resource for interns to learn how to incorporate composition/improvisation into all forms of music instruction.
Responsibilities:
The focus of intern work is flexible and dependent on skills, instrument, and interest. A specific schedule and area of focus will be created by the Director of Education and Education Coordinator will assist the interns throughout their time with the organization. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Day-to-day program operations:
- Support in managing instrument inventory
- Help with student transitions and dismissal
- Assist in classroom setup and teardown
- Provide child management support
- Concert logistics and event management
- Artistic research projects
- Audio visual, photography and graphic design:
- Help to create and edit video and photography for PR purposes and special projects
- Assist with the design and execution of publicity/marketing materials
- Assist with the maintenance of the OrchKids website and blog
- Teaching:
- Musical:
- Assist lead instructors in group classes and ensemble rehearsals
- Perform one-on-one pull-outs for individual student players
- Artistic: Assist with the creation and management of art projects for enrichment classes

Experience and Qualifications:
- Passion for and belief in OrchKids’ mission (visit our website to learn more: www.Orchkids.org)
- Desire to be a motivational mentor and role model for OrchKids students and community
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively and in a responsive manner
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Background in music, education and/or youth development is a plus
- Personal transportation to and from OrchKids program sites
- Comfortability with working on a computer that can access Google Drive files and email regularly
