OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school, music program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City’s least-resourced neighborhoods and schools. In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic assistance, performance, and mentorship opportunities, as well as meals and connection to social services at no cost to our families. Currently OrchKids works with nine public schools in Baltimore City, serving children from Pre-K through 12th grade. OrchKids is an acknowledged leader in the El Sistema-inspired and social-change through music movement throughout the world.
Job Summary:
The OrchKids Ensemble Conductor and Director is a dynamic educator who leads OrchKids string or wind ensemble students which may range from grades 2-12. Ensembles are separated into two main groups: beginner and advanced. The Ensemble Conductor/Director helps guide the musical development of the program’s ensemble players through weekly rehearsals and sectional plans.
The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. This methodology aims to promote synchronicity and community as well as simultaneously cultivating high artistic instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning challenging repertoire) and fostering creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition).
OrchKids supports the professional development of all our teaching artists by providing compensated and mandatory training on topics including trauma-informed teaching, classroom routines and practices, implicit bias and racism within the context of Baltimore City, and other pedagogical resources. Support and feedback is also provided through teacher observation, reflection meetings, and regular communication with Program Managers, Director of Education, and Manager of Programs. OrchKids Teaching Artists also have the opportunity to participate in a number of student concerts and partake in our unique Collective Composition workshops, during which we work with our students to create and perform new, original music.
Specific Responsibilities:
Requirements:
- Must have an up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination status and submit proof of vaccination (From CDC.gov: A person is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccination if they have received all recommended doses in the primary series and one booster when eligible. Getting a second booster is not necessary to be considered up to date at this time.)
Teaching Responsibilities:
- Lead rehearsals of wind or string ensembles (either beginner or advanced level ensembles) in accordance with the OrchKids curricular and educational philosophy as outlined in OrchKids orientations and teacher professional development sessions
- Serve as a consistent and compassionate mentor to OrchKids students
- Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating both their technical and ensemble skills
- Embrace OrchKids’ mission, goals, and guiding principles
- Perform administrative duties essential to running one’s own classroom, including photocopying, room setup/breakdown, lesson planning, etc.
- Supervise students during transitions and breaktime
- Attend required concerts, meetings, events and professional development sessions
- Actively incorporate into classes the perspectives, strategies, language, routines, and other pedagogical tools conveyed through the OrchKids professional development sessions
- Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with OrchKids staff
- Creating substitute rehearsal plans if there is a necessary absence
- Deciding on and communicating ensemble repertoire selection at the start of each semester
- Researching and programming diverse and dynamic instrumental genres, styles, and composers
- Additional tasks/responsibilities:
- Requesting in advance (at least 24 hours) any needs for copying of parts or scores
- Maintaining the scores and instrumental parts once copies are provided
- Establish an ensemble rehearsal plan ahead of rehearsal time and communicate it to any relevant sectional coaches or support teachers
- Supply requests/maintenance/managing ensemble needs
- Respond to emails within 48 hours
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a role model to students
- Strong classroom management skills
- Considerable experience leading beginner – intermediate level student ensembles
- In-depth knowledge of beginner to intermediate pedagogy and repertoire relevant to either wind or string ensemble instruments
- Willingness to jump in and embrace OrchKids’ approach to music-making through creative composition, improvisation and playing a variety of musical genres
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively with the OrchKids team and instrumental departments
- Punctuality, professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills

The Musicianship Teaching Artist is a dynamic educator who teaches early childhood music and movement classes to students in elementary school, primarily kindergarten through 2nd grade (typically in classes of 15-25 students). Musicianship classes incorporate materials, practices, repertoire, and activities drawing from methods including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Gordon, etc.
The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. This methodology aims to promote synchronicity and community as well as simultaneously cultivating high artistic instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning challenging repertoire) and fostering creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition).

- Submit monthly content goals in provided scope & sequence template
- Creating substitute plans if there is a necessary absence
- Attend required concerts, meetings, events and professional development sessions
Other Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with OrchKids staff — respond to emails within 48 hours.
- Perform administrative duties essential to running one’s own classroom, including photocopying, room setup/breakdown, lesson planning, etc.
- Supply requests/maintenance/managing classroom needs
- Be a representative of OrchKids, work with admin team to cultivate a strong, positive culture around OrchKids programming at assigned site
- Collaborate with the program team to maintain strong lines of communication with school partners (principal, teachers, staff, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a positive role model to students
- Experience working with groups of young children (pre-k through 3rd grade) in educational activities involving music, movement, and singing
- Familiarity with a wide range of early childhood music pedagogical methods including Orff, Kodaly, Dalcroze, Gordon, etc.
- High level of musicianship and comfortability with singing
- Comfort with an accompaniment instrument (piano, guitar, ukulele, etc.)
- Training in early childhood music highly preferred, but not required
- Strong classroom management and student group-leading skills
- Willingness to jump in and embrace OrchKids’ approach to music-making through creative composition, improvisation and playing a variety of musical genres
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively within the OrchKids team and Musicianship department
- Punctuality, professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills

Support and feedback is also provided through teacher observation, reflection meetings, and regular communication with Program Managers, Director of Education, and Manager of Programs. OrchKids Teaching Artists also have the opportunity to participate in a number of student concerts and partake in our unique Collective Composition workshops, during which we work with our students to create and perform new, original music.

Our Teaching Artists are dynamic educators who teach instrumental and choral group classes to students, ranging in grades from Pre-K to 12th, depending on the instrument and class. The classes are based on student level/age and meet for one hour, 3-4 days/week. The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, wholesome and evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. Embracing OrchKids educational philosophy, our teaching artists help guide the musical development of the program’s students through these classes. Substitute Teaching Artist positions include: choir, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion (orchestral percussion and bucket drumming), harp, and early childhood musicianship.

Job Summary:
The OrchKids Program Manager plays an integral role in managing and leading the operational, artistic, and logistical planning for OrchKids programming. This position acts as a core member of the OrchKids program team and is responsible for running the daily operations at assigned sites as well as the oversight of teaching artist staff. As a key fixture of the program team, this position also supports coordinating cross-site projects as well as guest artist performances, workshops, and other engagement opportunities for their sites. Supervised by the OrchKids Manager of Programs, this position also works collaboratively with the OrchKids Director of Education as well as other Program Managers and team members. This position will have some evening/weekend responsibilities.
Specific Responsibilities:
DESIGN:
- Work collaboratively with OrchKids Manager of Programs, Director of Education, and Senior Director to design site programmatic framework and schedule for 2-3 sites
- Work collaboratively with the Manager of Programs, Director of Education, and Artistic and Program Operations Manager to create/implement artistic content, initiatives, workshops, and guest artist engagements
- Design/Implement cross-site opportunities with the Program, Education, and Leadership Teams
- Work closely with Manager of Programs and other Leadership/Education Team members to evaluate programming and design strategic adjustments to current and new OrchKids programming
MANAGE/SUPERVISE:
- Manage the operations for all assigned sites including:
- Student enrollment process, site-based payroll, data collection, student tracking/retention, any administrative reporting, site level communication systems, and other HR matters in adherence to the OrchKids standard operating procedures
- Manage OrchKids Teaching Artists at assigned sites
- Work collaboratively with the Manager of Programs and Director of Education and Senior Manager in the creation of site budgets and site budgetary decisions
- Manage the OrchKids site-based calendar, including OrchKids event information, teacher absences, and school site events such as field trips, testing schedules, closure, etc.
BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT:
- Work closely with Teaching Artists, Manager of Programs, and Education Teams to implement consistent behavior management systems

INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:

- Manage the loan process for student instruments, including maintaining records of taking instruments home, when instruments are not returned, or lost/damaged instruments
- Support Teaching Artists and students with instrument specific queries or repair issues in collaboration with Artistic and Operations Manager
- Assist in equipment transport, loading/unloading, and setup for concerts, guest artist performances, and special events at OrchKids sites and concert venues

- Interact with all program teams and Teaching Artists
- Cultivate a strong, positive culture for the OrchKids program for students at assigned sites
- Participate, with colleagues, in all large-scale events for the program and assist in all major projects
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual candidate strongly preferred but not required
- Personal commitment to social justice, restorative educational and anti-racist practices, as well as trauma-informed philosophies
- Demonstrated effective planning and organizational skills, able to meet deadlines
- Personal leadership through example, coupled with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
- Ability to multi-task calmly and to handle emergencies effectively
- Effective public speaking skills and presence
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong managerial and people skills, and the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy and the strictest confidence as needed
- At least 3 years of experience working in a mentorship and/or education capacity, with elementary/middle school age children preferred
- Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjustments to priorities throughout the day
- Personal integrity and strict code of confidentiality and professionalism
- Strong commitment to the philosophy of social change through music
- Ability to handle numerous projects simultaneously
- Ability to implement projects from conception to completion with minimal supervision
- Proficient in Microsoft programs, and ability to learn other software programs as needed
- Ability to work nights and weekends, as required
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Successful completion of a background check through Baltimore City Public Schools
