TEACHING ARTIST POSITIONS

Title: OrchKids Summer 2023 Book Club Facilitator (Lead and Support Positions)
Department: OrchKids
Reports to: OrchKids Associate Director of Programs
Classification: Part-time
Compensation:
- $40/hour for Book Club Facilitators (8 positions available)
- $50/hour for Lead Book Club Facilitator (1 position available)
Dates: July 10-28th 2023
Hours: Monday-Thursday 9:00-10:30am
Organizational Summary:
OrchKids uses music as a vehicle for students to develop 21st century skills (creativity, collaboration, leadership, etc.) that are transferable to all areas of their lives. Marin Alsop, Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and OrchKids Founding Director, shaped OrchKids into the cornerstone of the BSO’s community engagement efforts across the city with her artistic leadership and direction. OrchKids was founded in 2008 with 30 students at one elementary school with seed funding from Marin Alsop and Founding Donors Rheda Becker and Robert E. Meyerhoff.
OrchKids now works with seven schools in Baltimore City, serving over 1,800 children from Pre-K through 12th grade during school, after school, and in weeklong workshops. In collaboration with several community partners OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic assistance, meals, mental health resources, connection to social services, as well as performance and mentorship opportunities at no cost to students and families. OrchKids is an acknowledged leader in the El Sistema and social-change through music movement throughout the world.
Job Summary:
The OrchKids Lead Book Club Facilitator is contracted to help facilitate OrchKids students during the Summer Book Club Program for students in grades 1st-8th grade.
Book Club Facilitators will be expected to create their lesson plans/assignments based on the pacing of the book reading, guided by the Lead Book Club Facilitator. Grade groupings will go as follows: 1st-3rd grade, 4th-5th grade, and 6-8th grade. The Lead Book Club Facilitator and supporting Book Club Facilitators will be provided a reading list by OrchKids, including books from all reading levels, to help create and implement a curriculum and reading assignments for students.
Requirements:
- Must have a complete COVID-19 Vaccine and submit proof of vaccination
Responsibilities include:
- Prepare weekly reading plans based on the curriculum provided
- Assist students with the successful completion of assignments and check for accuracy
Qualifications:
- Experience with classroom teaching or working with groups of up to 10 students
- Experience with tutoring or mentoring, especially in the field of Elementary and/or Middle School academic work
- Experience in both Elementary/Middle School reading
- Ability to work effectively with children of diverse backgrounds
- Desire to be a motivational mentor and role model for OrchKids students and community
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively with team mates
- High level of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills

Title: Substitute Teaching Artist 2022-23 School Year
This position will be offered to qualified teaching artists who will be contacted in the event that a substitute teaching artist in their area of expertise is needed.
Reports to: Director of Education and Program Managers
Classification: Contractual, hired on an as-needed basis
Compensation: $40/hour
Location: Any one of our OrchKids program sites (7 locations across Baltimore City)
Hours: Dependent on the position and site where the substitute teacher is required

Job Summary:
Our Teaching Artists are dynamic educators who teach instrumental and choral group classes to students, ranging in grades from Pre-K to 12th, depending on the instrument and class. The classes are based on student level/age and meet for one hour, 3-4 days/week. The OrchKids educational philosophy focuses on student-centered learning, holistic and evidence-based teaching practices relevant to our students’ lives, creation and improvisation, inclusion, student voice and agency, and ensemble music-making. Embracing OrchKids educational philosophy, our teaching artists help guide the musical development of the program’s students through these classes. This methodology aims to promote synchronicity and community as well as simultaneously cultivating high artistic instrumental skills (i.e. technique, learning challenging repertoire) and fostering creativity (e.g. improvisation and composition).
Substitute Teaching Artist positions include: choir, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion (orchestral percussion and bucket drumming), harp, and early childhood musicianship.
Responsibilities:
- Arrive at scheduled time on site
- Group or private lesson classes in accordance with the OrchKids curriculum and educational philosophy
- Follow the lesson plan outline provided by the students’ primary OrchKids teacher
- Serve as a compassionate mentor to OrchKids students
- Hold students to high artistic standards, cultivating both their technical and ensemble skills
- Embrace OrchKids’ mission, goals, and guiding principles
- Supervise students during transitions and breaktime
- Maintain professional, prompt lines of communication with OrchKids staff
Qualifications:
- Passion for working with youth and desire to serve as a role model to students.
- Strong classroom management skills
- Completed Background Check from Baltimore City Schools (100% of the cost will be reimbursed by OrchKids)
- Considerable experience teaching beginner – intermediate level music students, preferably in a group setting
- In-depth knowledge of instrument specific pedagogy and repertoire
- Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively
- Punctuality, professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills

Internships
Title: OrchKids Summer Intern 2023
Department: OrchKids
Reports to: OrchKids Director of Education, Education Coordinator, and Program Managers
Dates: July 10th – July 28th, 2023
Location: Goucher College, 1021 Dulaney Valley Rd, Baltimore, MD 21204
Hours: Approximately 25 hours per week for three weeks during program time (Monday – Friday, 8 am – 3:30 pm). Hours can be flexible depending on availability. Some weekend and evening hours are required.
Compensation: Both paid and unpaid internships are available.
- Paid interns receive $150/week and must be available to work 25 hours per week. These positions are typically offered to college students who are interested in pursuing a career in music, education, and arts administration.
- Unpaid internships are often pursued by high school and college students looking to fulfill service learning requirements (or those who are just interested in supporting a musically-driven environment).

Job Summary:
The BSO OrchKids program is seeking interns for its 2023 Summer Session. Interns will work with OrchKids staff to provide support in the operations of a large music education non-profit. In addition to assisting with teaching responsibilities, administrative duties, and special program projects, volunteers will have the opportunity to gain leadership experience, develop professional goals, and learn from experienced OrchKids teaching artists and staff in musical and creative activities. This summer’s session will conclude with a student Collective Composition week. The OrchKids staff who will be leading the Collective Composition sessions have done this work around the world and provide a unique resource for volunteers to learn how to incorporate composition/improvisation into all forms of music instruction.
Responsibilities:
The focus of intern work is flexible and dependent on skills, instrument, and interest. A specific schedule and area of focus will be created by the Director of Education and Education Coordinator who will assist the interns throughout their time with the organization. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
- Day-to-day program operations:
- Support in managing instrument inventory
- Help with student transitions and dismissal
- Assist in classroom setup and teardown
- Provide child management support
- Concert logistics and event management
- Artistic research projects
- Videography, photography, and graphic design
- Help to create and edit video and photography for PR purposes and special projects
- Assist with the design and execution of publicity/marketing materials

- Perform one-on-one pull-outs for individual student players
